The Arcadian Kicks Interview

The Arcadian Kicks are a Birmingham-based band consisting of
Becky Wilson (Vocals);  Rebekah Pennington  (Sax, Keys, Backing Vocals); Harry Grainger (Drums) Tommy Kelly (Bass) and Thomas Holloway (Guitar, Backing Vocals). In 2010 they performed on the BBC Introducing Stage at T in The Park. I sent them some questions about their inspirations and ambitions as a band.

How did you get together as a band?
Becky Wilson: We were all together at school, apart from Harry (our drummer) we found him in Leamington Spa. Been together as we are now for about 4 years.

Who are your musical inspirations?
Becky Wilson: It changes all the time, we obviously have staple bands that we all look up to; Blondie, the Stones, the Stooges, The Kills, Miles Kane, The Naked and the Famous, Portishead etc... but we’re all into discovering new music, for me personally I’d say Lana Del Ray at the moment, a bit of Tripwires, Sleigh Bells, Zola Jesus...

How was it working and recording with Mike Chapman (producer of Blondie's classic album Parallel Lines)?
Becky Wilson: We’ve worked with him twice now, the first time was mental! 3 weeks of craziness. The second time round we felt like so much more comfortable and at ease with each other, he knows what we’re after and how to give it to us.
If you got a word each to describe your band, what word would you each pick?
Becky Wilson: I can’t speak for everyone in the band, but my word would have to be: EVOCATIVE at the moment.

If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Becky Wilson: Personally I’d love to collaborate with Karen O, she’s a major influence to me and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are just cool as fuck.

What are your ambitions for the future? Is there a band you aspire to be as big as?
Becky Wilson: Our ambitions would be just to keep on touring, expand our following, get our music out there for people to hopefully dance, drink and have a good time to, travel and have fun....I wouldn’t like to judge a band on the scale of how ‘big’ they are, just whether they write good music and put on a good show, many bands are underrated, but a big crowd is always nice.

The Arcadian Kick's new single 'I Wanna Take You Home' is out on the 22nd of January.

  2. Good interview, and I like their song "Play The Girl" might need to change my top 20 songs of 2011 and make sure that's featured!
