Having spent more than 40 years in the music industry with The Velvet Underground and by himself as a solo artist; Lou Reed's new venture sees him collaborating with legendary heavy metal band Metallica.
Having heard that these two critically acclaimed artists were joining forces for an entire album sounded great. So I decided to listen to the album in full so I could give you my opinion on a possibly amazing collaboration.
When listening to this album I noticed a few things.
Firstly Metallica still rock. Even though I would not consider myself as a fan metal or Metallica, I have to give them credit where credit is due. The guitar riff in 'Iced Honey' for instance is superb.
Opener 'Brandenburg Gate' has a lovely acoustic start which then leads into Lou Reed's vocals where a problem soon emerges. Lou Reed's singing isn't actually singing. It just sounds like an old man having a rant which then ruins the fantastic chorus of the first track.
This continues throughout the record.
His singing is out of time and out of tune. The bad vocals make the music sound like noise.
Another problem is that it is far too long. It's 87 minutes in length with only 10 songs which means that all the tracks on Lulu seem to drag.
The odd occasion where Metallica singer James Hetfield does sing, is almost a relief from the constant droning of Lou Reed.
The two different artists simply don't gel together well at all

i completely agree. there re times when lou stops 'singing' and things seem to shape up a little, but it's relief rather than anything else and those moments are few and far betwen :p thanks very much for the review
